A Taste of Persia
Persian, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom
Tucked away near the original WHQ (RIP), this Persian eatery offers a reasonably priced Persian eating experience, serving your typical Persian dishes of stews and skewer kebabs with rice. The food is reasonable and flavoursome with catchy names such as 'Gay-me Bad-man'. With a tardis-like upstairs seating area for the larger parties, the décor was plain but clean although not as ethnic as Ali Baba’s… what?! No stage and ‘Sultans of Swing’ I hear you cry! Service is average. Overall good quality, made better by a pint of dog in the Centurion beforehand …and afterwards.
Sabatini's
Italian, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom
Located almost right under the Tyne Bridge, Ristorante Sabatini's is rather more expensive than your standard ‘happy hour’ Italian gaff. Average sized but very tasty portions with the standard pizza and pasta varieties you’d expect plus a few unusual dishes on offer. Décor is characteristically Italian with a warm and lively feel. Also appears to be a popular place although it does look to attract large gatherings of Sloanes (collective noun?). Service is very professional and prompt. Notably one of the more upmarket Italian’s in the Toon, but suitably somewhere to taken the other halves parents.
Happiness Inn
Chinese, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom
‘Chinese people eating in a Chinese restaurant is a good sign’ should be the old Chinese proverb. Situated along Percy St., this often unnoticed Eastern eatery offers an abundant choice of quality food including a remarkably good value range of set menus. The décor starts off… well, purple, before you emerge into a popular Chinese restaurant-esque setting complete with large illuminated Hong Kong skyline on the wall. Service is brisk and consistent. Chopsticks are a must – even just for comedy value and dropping food. Four well fed for £50 including drinks equals good value. Overall a good Chinese.
