The Godfather

, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom

Too many pre-EC drinks meant we were ravenous on entering The Godfather which was warm and welcoming, the décor being old-school Italian and no worse for that; disappointingly no Tommy guns. Food is rustic and hot, perfect for when the temperature outside is typically Northern. Usual thing with pizza and pasta, too much to finish even though you want to. Specials are delivered verbally rather than on the wall and they are definitely special: nobody can argue with bacon wrapped black pudding apart from veggies and they don’t count, I mean, C'mon pig is delicious...

Simla Tandoori

, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom

The service, food and décor are all typical of an Indian restaurant here; there is nothing bad to say about the place. There is only one thing that I can remember that made it stand out from the crowd and that was the free key ring given to every diner - being a sucker for shiny things I think this is great.

Mack loved the yellow poppadom sauce and in his attempt to gain weight drank the lot and more, impressing our new ample-chested EC connoisseur no end, lucky lady.

Huge bottles of Kingfisher a big plus for thirsty boys...

Brasserie Black Door

, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom

First of the Eat! Festival special events. Much like myself B(l)ack Door promises much but sometimes lets down with the delivery. Portions are in the modern style; i.e. not much. The effect being that you're still hungry when the un-modern dense-as-a-housebrick-dessert arrives to satisfy much more. Hot food served on cold plates means cuisine is luke warm (after 3 pints of Cluny's Black Sheep I was too hungry to be fussy). Quality is very good, the ambience of the place feels temporary since only a partition wall separates the eating and art sections. Toilets were EC's poshest so far.

Barn Under a Wandering Star

, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom

Right, thanks for all turning up, you bastards. You missed a treat - food is lush and wine is reasonably priced. Decor is American Desert (not dessert) theme - completely out of touch with the modern English/Italian food served (£14 for 3 courses B4 6.30pm). Anyway, me and me housemate had a great feed, risotto starter is sublime, as is the ginger pudding. Mains are selection of fish, meat, meat or veg - all looked delicious & perfect sized portions. VFM=V.Good. Perfect for a cheap date - warning: staff are unhappy to see you, if it's quiet not much atmosphere.
